Sky Lantern Release & Safety Guidelines

A major advantage of sky lanterns, compared with fireworks, is that they are quieter and far safer. Light a Lantern (SA) sky lanterns come with full release and safety instructions. To ensure you are safe whilst enjoying them, please follow these guidelines carefully:

  • Familiarise yourself with the lanterns before lighting and launching them.
  • Always use two adults over the age of 16 to launch a lantern.
  • Never light sky lanterns whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs and never smoke whilst handling the lanterns.
  • Before the sky lantern is released, always ensure that any naked flames are supervised and never left unattended. Make sure you have water and/or fire extinguishers at hand.
  • Prior to use, all lanterns should be kept in a dry, secure place away from children. Ensure that all children are kept under supervision and away from the source of ignition during the release.

IMPORTANT RELEASE NOTES:

  • Please allow at least 2 – 3 minutes for the lantern to fill with hot air. During the hot summer months lanterns can take longer before they are ready for release.
  • DO NOT release the sky lanterns in wind conditions that make lighting the lantern difficult. Wind should not be stronger than 7 km/ph.
  • DO NOT release a sky lantern that is torn or contains holes as it could result in premature landing.
  • DO NOT release sky lanterns within a 10km radius of an operational airport or landing strip.
  • DO NOT release sky lanterns near to dry crops, farmland or next to thatched roofed properties.
  • Always check the wind direction prior to releasing the sky lanterns to ensure that no obstacles are in the direct flight path.
  • The flight path of the sky lanterns should be clear of buildings, trees, overhead cables and mountains.
  • If you are planning an event, please refer to a South African weather service website: www.weathersa.co.za in order to plan ahead.

Neither Light a Lantern and Light a Lantern (SA), nor its owners are liable or responsible for any loss or damage to property and/or persons resulting from the release of lanterns supplied by Light a Lantern (SA).
